THE ALCHEMY OF LAMENT

A Pathway of Liberation

1–4 November 2025

4-Day Retreat with Alexandra Derwen & Tuomas Rounakari

"Our greatest treasurers lie next to our deepest wounds" — Jung

Two of the world's leading Lament facilitators Alexandra Derwen and Tuomas Rounakari, together, invite you to explore your inner wilderness and liberate the Cry from within you.

In a world where authentic emotion is feared and suppressed, we make space for your Truth and your GOLD.

The land of Czechia invites us all to dance, move, sing, make music and through expertly crafted ritual and ceremony we will encounter and unite the elements; fire, earth, water, air and ether by our personal and collective laments.

This is an invitation into power, presence and potential.

The Vision for the "Alchemy of Lament" Retreat

  • Alchemy, transforming our wounds into Gold
  • Liberating the inner cry, authentic emotion, wildness
  • Music, song, movement, ritual, ceremony using the Elements

WHAT IS LAMENT?

Lament is a universal practice, a global genre of traditional music, found in some form in all ancient cultures and continues to live and evolve today despite centuries of suppression. From the islands of Greece, to the Middle East, among the indigenous cultures of the Amazon and across Africa, to Romania, Karelia to Papua New Guinea lament traditions remain intact. We are living in times of revival of these traditions too, in Finland, Karelia and Ireland, for example, whereas in some parts of the world the suppression continues.

Lament is musical expression carried by emotion; combining melody, poetry and natural tears. The crying is not forced but liberated as we craft laments from topics that already have a strong emotional charge. We can craft laments from anything we know makes us cry.

Lament and Rites of Passage are intrinsically interwoven. Traditionally, of course, at Death but also, for example, at Marriage. At both these thresholds the community faces the loss of a member and, as such, there are multiple Rites of Passage happening at the same time. For all things born anew there must first be a death; for all things gained require first a letting go; as the individual transcends in their moment of transformation, so the community must also process the change in state. Traditionally specific ritual laments took place in order to ensure a safe and healthy passage through the turbulence of transition.

Laments are also used outside of communal ceremony. All of us live through the cycles and seasons of personal rites of passage and lament has been used to assist in these times as well; for example recovering from trauma, releasing emotional burdens and gaining new perspectives to difficult situations.

“Trauma is not what happened to us. Trauma is what happened inside of us, which is a good news. We cannot change what happened to us. But once we recognize trauma as an internal psychological wound with its many manifestations, we can heal at any given time.”— Gabor Maté

ABOUT LAMENT BY ALEXANDRA DERWEN:

"Lament is a primal technology for communicating between realms with nuanced intelligence and creating pathways, opening and closing portals, moving matter and spirit to where it needed to be. All the worlds lament traditions are reflections of the Art and Science of it, but they are not it. They are expressions of lament but not the True Lament itself.

Lament in its True form is about restoring the balance of order and chaos, it can expediate syntropy and entropy, it draws and re-draws the horizons between worlds. Lament remembers the first ever sound, the wrench of separation from Unity, in the knowing of the self and other, it is the siren of the violence of duality and its lullaby. It is the pitch where agony and ecstasy meet and are inseparable; when Love pieces the finite heart and scatters it into infinite pieces."

 Alexandra and Tuomas together

"Facilitating lament workshops has irreversibly changed who I am and how I see the world. Lament is a process that allows one to be seen in their authenticity."
Tuomas Rounakari

It's a rare collaboration between two true masters — and it flows effortlessly.

Tuomas Rounakari is one of the key figures in revitalising Karelian lament traditions in Finland. He learned the essence of laments from the Karelian elder Martta Kuikka who was the first to bridge between the Karelian lament tradition and modern-day Finland. Together with Pirkko Fihlman, Tuomas developed a model of teaching laments in grief circles that allow the participants to create their unique lament and be witnessed in their grief.

Between them, Alexandra and Tuomas bring together decades of experience.

Alexandra came to lament and working with the dying 30 years ago and has been leading grief ceremony, circles and teaching lament for 15 years.

Over the past 20 (or more) years of running workshops and ceremonies Tuomas has been midwifing and witnessing over a thousand individual laments across the continents.

The working collaboration between Tuomas and Alexandra was brokered by a mutual friend and colleague in Ireland who had a vision of bringing the Bear feasts together with the lament for two retreats in March 2024 called Bear Awakens. So successful and potent was this working union that they repeated the Bear Awakensin 2025 and plan another in 2026, with a Dragon Awakens retreat as well for those experienced in lament practice.
